Red Queen

Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard, is one of many books I've been listening to as an audiobook while I travel. I really enjoyed it! It is a fiction/fantasy novel for teens. If you like the Hunger Games and Divergent, you'd really like this one!

Mare Barrow is a teenage girl with red blood and a big surprise coming her way. She lives in a poor village with other "reds", trying to steal to provide for her family. Her family and the people in her village have red blood, which makes them second-class citizens to the "silvers", who are people with silver blood. Silvers have special powers: some can bend metal to their will, some are fiercely strong, and some control fire or water. No reds have these powers, and they are discriminated against because of it. That is, until Mare has an accident that reveals something different about her: she has powers...and red blood.

The Last Apprentice Series

The Last Apprentice is a series I started last year, and just picked up again! There are 13 books in the series and I'm currently reading book #7. The books are quick reads and full of danger, adventure, and menacing creatures of the dark.  Tom Ward is a young apprentice to a Spook, who is someone who fights the darkness in the world. The fantasy series follows Tom's apprenticeship with Old Gregory and all the monsters, witches, and many more creatures he has to defeat. Tom also has a family secret that is woven through the novels that changes his life forever.

If you like fantasy books, the TV show Supernatural or anything paranormal, these books are for you!

Stella By Starlight

The best book I've read this summer is Stella by Starlight by Sharon Draper. If you liked Esperanza Rising and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, then Stella by Starlight is the perfect historical fiction book for you! Stella is a young teen who struggles to understand justice in the segregated south. She is brave, feisty, and always stands up for what is right.  In the end, though, will her wit be enough to help her family and community before the KKK casts a shadow over them all? Find out in Stella by Starlight!
